Estes Park Residence

A compact 1900 sf home is the heart of a small compound of buildings overlooking Longs Peak in Estes Park, Colorado. As always, major concerns were maximum sensitivity to the site with minimal environmental impact, a human scale to the structures and a thoughtful use of materials.

The home is tucked into the hillside and opens to the south and west. The upper floor, with its tent-like living areas, radiates around a cedar-clad stair core and stone hearth. Built-in fir cabinetry and fir trim surrounds the space, while the floor is recycled heart pine. A stowable ladder provides access to a small upper loft. Below are three bedrooms, two baths, a sitting room, and laundry. The lower floor material is native sandstone and heart pine.

A 1500sf garage building was added when the clients became full-time residents. It includes a mid-level guest suite and an upper floor library. A small building with an office and studio completes the scheme.
